Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away

Thin Lizzy were the quintessential rock band, and the band’s classic line-up of Phil Lynott, Brian Downey, Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson in full flight was absolutely electric. As lead singer of Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott was a songwriter, a poet, a dreamer and with him at its centre they had one of the greatest front men of all time.

Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away is a feature documentary on the life and music of Phil Lynott, telling the story of how a young black boy from working class 1950s Dublin, became Ireland’s greatest Rock Star. Told extensively through the words of Lynott himself and focusing on some of his iconic songs, the film gets to the heart of his story, as a father, a husband, a friend, a son and as a rock icon.

Phil led Thin Lizzy and wrote their signature tunes ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’, ‘Jailbreak’ and ‘Chinatown’, and following the lead of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, was one of the first to mix poetry with rock music. Phil was as charismatic on stage as off, and his magnetism on par with Jim Morrison or Michael Hutchence.
And now LONG PLAY MUSIC FILMS are proud to announce the forthcoming release of director Emer Reynolds’ hotly anticipated film, Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away.

Notable appearances include those from fellow Irishman Adam Clayton of U2, Metallica’s James Hetfield, Suzi Quatro, and Huey Lewis – together with very personal insights from Phil’s wife and daughters. The new film was recently awarded the prestigious Doc’n Roll Film Festival and bestowed its top honours on Dublin- based director Emer Reynolds’ “mesmeric portrait” of Phil Lynott, the charismatic poet, songwriter and wild man.

The documentary also features some amazing footage of their Sydney Opera House gig in the late ’70s, jamming on the steps of the iconic Sydney Opera House, where they later performed to a crowd estimated to be more than 100,000 people.
